On Tuesday 11th November, we ran our traditional Bake Sale and Quiz for World Diabetes Day. Here’s our quiz with some common misconceptions about Type 1 Diabetes and their answers:
Q: Taking insulin cures diabetes.
A: False. Unfortunately not! Insulin doesn’t cure diabetes but it does provide an effect treatment- before it was discovered in 1921 Type 1 Diabetes was a death sentence. People with diabetes rely on taking insulin everyday through injections or an insulin pump.

Q: Type 1 Diabetes turns into Type 2.
A: False. Type 1 and Type 2 are separate diseases, and one can’t turn into the other.

Q: Type 1 diabetes is caused by an unhealthy diet.
A: False. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease and can’t be prevented. It has no relation to diet.

Q: Diabetics should never eat sweets.
A: False. As long as they take the insulin to match it, people with Type 1 Diabetes can eat whatever like they, just like people without diabetes. In fact, sweets can be life saving if a Type 1 Diabetic’s blood sugar drops too low (known as a hypo).

Q: Only kids get Type 1 Diabetes.
A: False. Although the majority of people diagnosed with Type 1 are young, it can be diagnosed at any age.

Q: Diabetics cannot participate in athletics.
A: False. People with diabetes just need to carefully balance their insulin, carbohydrate intake and exercise. Infact there are lots of athletes with Type 1 Diabetes, including extreme freeride snowboarder Chris Southwell!
In fact, all of the answers were FALSE! Many people we talked to one Tuesday found one or two of these surprising… If you would like to learn more about Type One Diabetes and many myths surrounding it, you can also find lots more information from the links to Diabetes UK and the JDRF below (and of course ask us any questions you may have!)
